Sombrerete, 30 de marzo de 2026.- President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo responded to U.S. President Donald J. Trump regarding his statements about renaming the Gulf of Mexico.

During her press conference from Sombrerete, Zacatecas, Sheinbaum stated: “We are partners, we do not want problems… but sovereignty is not ceded,” in reference to the controversy over the gulf’s name.

U.S. President Donald Trump implemented Executive Order 14172, titled ‘Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,’ which officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the ‘Gulf of America’ in his country’s systems.

Trump justified the change by stating that the United States possesses 92% of the surrounding area, leaving only 8% to Mexico.

In response, Sheinbaum recalled that the name ‘Gulf of Mexico’ has international recognition since the year 1607.

The Mexican Government filed a civil lawsuit against Google (case file 2696/2025) for moral and punitive damages, demanding that Google Maps and Apple Maps restore the original name.

Regarding the challenges facing her administration, Sheinbaum acknowledged that one of the main challenges has been the global change brought by Republican Donald Trump’s return to the White House, which has resulted in trade tensions.

She pointed out: “I would say that the challenges we have faced are rather external, in our case” and added that “the global change caused by President Trump’s arrival to the United States Government, with tariffs and a new vision of world trade. That is a challenge we have had to face.”

She also mentioned other current challenges: “Today there are other challenges: oil at more than 100 dollars a barrel, fertilizers five times more expensive, product of the war in the Middle East.”

Despite these challenges, Sheinbaum assured that the Mexican economy maintains strength, highlighting that the peso continues to be among the best-performing currencies globally. She stated: “Two days ago, and this happens very often, the currency that appreciated the most was the peso, of all the currencies in the world.”
